A STUDY ON CULTURAL FACTORS OF ENGLISH SLOGANS TRANSLATED INTO VIETNAMESE

As we all know, English is currently regarded as a worldwide tongue and is spoken in the majority of nations, including Vietnam. However, the structural and cultural differences between the two languages pose translation challenges in translating English to Vietnamese. Moreover, with international communication and integration, more and more English commercial slogans are being used in Vietnam. As a result, this study aims to explore how cultural factors affect the English-Vietnamese slogan translation process by analyzing slogan translations from English to Vietnamese in commerce, education, and society. At the same time, the study suggests translating slogans from a cultural point of view.

THE WORD FORMATION OF SLANG TERMS ON ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE SOCIAL MEDIA IN 2023

The study delved into the formation of slang terms on English and Vietnamese social media in 2023, utilizing a theoretical framework that combines the works of Yule (2010), Meyer (2009), Schmid (2015), and Le (2023). Employing a quantitative method to analyze the data, the researchers discovered several instances of various word formation processes in both languages. In English, this study found 14 cases of meaning extension, 5 of acronyms, 5 of coinage, 4 of clipping, 3 of compounding, 1 of conversion, and 1 of syllable change. Meanwhile, Vietnamese had 13 cases of meaning extension, 8 of borrowing, 8 of syllable change, 7 of compounding, 6 of multiple processes, and 2 of coinage. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the field of linguistics by expanding our knowledge of word formation processes.

THE SYNTACTIC AND SEMANTIC FEATURES OF STYLISTIC OXYMORONS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This article aims to identify the syntactic and semantic features of stylistic oxymorons in the English language. Some previous researchers and linguists have studied oxymorons from different aspects- with a comparison and contrast in native and non-native languages about the functions, concepts, categorizations, semantic logical foundations, and expressive values. The article uses qualitative and quantitative research methods with techniques like description, linguistic and contextual analysis, induction, deduction, comparison, etc. Semantic fields and oxymoron types were grouped as part of the data statistics from a collection of 570 oxymorons, based on the sources of numerous articles, websites, plays, poems, textbooks, novels, short stories, colloquialisms, everyday conversations, sayings and quotes for one year. The data was then combined and analyzed to determine the semantic aspects of literal and figurative meanings for the stylistic variation of literary, artistic, philosophical, media, and everyday expressions. This article will contribute to a vast understanding of the oxymorons of the English language from the linguistic and social-cultural dimensions for both lecturers and students at the Faculty of English, Hanoi Open University.

A STUDY ON LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF METAPHORS IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE IDIOMS RELATED TO COLOURS

To obtain effectiveness in daily communication and reduce the “burden” of cramming with a large number of vocabularies, people change the meanings of words. In fact, metaphors and metonymies are two popular ways to change the meanings of words. This study is centered around metaphors in 181 English and Vietnamese idioms related to colors. The comparative method, quantitative, qualitative, and semantic analysis are used throughout this study to find similarities and differences between metaphors in English and Vietnamese idioms related to colors in terms of linguistics and culture.

A STUDY ON THE ONLINE LANGUAGE OF THE YOUNG TODAY BASED ON THE SOCIAL PLATFORM FACEBOOK

The online language of young people on social platforms is being studied by linguists in general and Vietnamese linguists in particular. The author has researched the hot trend speech patterns (new trends) that young people often use on Facebook and surveyed the characteristics of the origin, linguistic characteristics, and socio-cultural characteristics of this new language. The author used qualitative and quantitative research methods from the data source, which are hot trend words and sentence patterns in chats, articles, and comments on Facebook. The research results show three basic sources of hot trend language: movies, music videos, clips, and posts on social networks. Hot trend sentence patterns are used in three basic forms: inserting English into Vietnamese speech, using slang, and using new structures. This is a breakthrough in the Vietnamese language, contributing significantly to enriching the Vietnamese language and making the language of young people unique.

ENHANCING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERPRETATION PRACTICE THROUGH GROUP PRESENTATION

Translation can be considered the fifth special skill – an advanced skill together with four skills. Thus, improving and practicing this skill plays a crucial part in teaching translation and interpretation majors. Up to now, not many studies have been carried out on enhancing interpretation practice through making group presentations. This article, as a result of research conducted during 8 weeks in the 2^nd term (2023-2024), shows learners' improvement in vocabulary and expression, together with equivalence and using body language in interpretation practice. The method mainly relies on qualitative methods, including the teacher’s classroom observation, note-taking, and learners' surveys. The findings are expected to enrich teaching methodology for those who are in charge of interpretation courses in training English majors at universities.

THE IMPACT OF VISUAL THINKING STRATEGY ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE MAJORS’ ORAL COMMUNICATION PROFICIENCY

Visual Thinking Strategy can be characterized as a "meta-visual-lingual" endeavor involving the verbal articulation of thoughts provoked by a visual stimulus. The attempt is to enhance an individual's capacity to interpret, describe, and analyze imagery by engaging in active observation and collaborative discussion. This study aims to clarify how visual thinking strategy is employed in speaking lessons to solve students' English speaking problems in university education. The sample included 70 English-majored students at Dong Nai Technology University, comprising 35 first-year students and 35 sophomores. The examination of the questionnaire and semi-structured interviews indicated that activities inspired by Visual Thinking effectively promote students' ease in speaking situations, thereby resulting in improved practice and proficiency in English speaking ability. This suggests that Visual Thinking may serve as an effective approach to providing university students with an active learning environment. Nonetheless, the notion of visual thinking and the benefits of activities inspired by visual thinking are relatively unfamiliar concepts within the realm of English education. Consequently, additional studies are necessary to create lesson plans that incorporate visual thinking strategies for learners of the English language.

THE SOCIOLINGUISTICS OF GENDERED NAMING IN ENGLISH-SPEAKING SOCIETIES

Names serve not only as markers of individual identity but also as cultural artifacts that encapsulate societal values, historical contexts, and linguistic evolution. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of gendered naming conventions in English-speaking communities, tracing their historical trajectories and examining contemporary trends. Employing a mixed-methods approach that integrates both quantitative and qualitative analyses, the research investigates naming practices from the Anglo-Saxon period to modern shifts toward gender inclusivity. The findings reveal that while traditional gender associations in naming remain deeply embedded, gender-neutral names are growing alongside the profound influence of globalization and technological advancements on naming conventions. By synthesizing insights from etymology, sociolinguistics, and cultural studies, this study elucidates the role of names in both reflecting and shaping individual identity within dynamic cultural landscapes.

AN ANALYSIS OF ADDITIVE TRANSITIONS IN THE CALL OF THE WILD BY JACK LONDON AND THE VIETNAMESE EQUIVALENTS IN ITS TRANSLATION VERSION

This study aims to explore the use of additive transitions in The Call of the Wild by Jack London and their Vietnamese equivalents. The research intends to assist both educators and learners in addressing challenges related to translating linking words from English to Vietnamese. The transitions are analyzed through the theoretical frameworks of Halliday and Hassan (1976) and Nguyen Hong Con’s (2005) translation method. The study primarily employs qualitative, quantitative, and descriptive approaches. Data is gathered on additive transitions along with two translation methods: word-for-word and addition. The analysis covers 22 additive transitions used 1,555 times in Jack London’s novel, with translator Hoang Ha Vu rendering 09 of these through omission. The findings are intended to aid both lecturers and students in mastering the meanings of transitions in English and exploring strategies for translating transition words in literary texts.

EXCLAMATION EXPRESSIONS IN SIDNEY SHELDON’S NOVEL “IF TOMORROW COMES” AND ITS VIETNAMESE TRANSLATION EQUIVALENTS

This paper investigates the syntactic features and expression exclamations in English in the novel “If tomorrow comes” by the author Sidney Sheldon and its Vietnamese equivalent by translator Nguyen Ba Long. It is conducted with the hope of finding out the similarities and differences between how exclamations are formed in both languages and suggesting practical applications to the learning and teaching of English as a foreign language in Vietnam. Descriptive and comparative methods are used. 248 data collected from the novel “If tomorrow comes” by Sidney Sheldon are used for analysis. The result of the study illustrates the fact that exclamations in the novel “If tomorrow comes” and its Vietnamese equivalents are quite similar in syntactic and semantic features. The study aims to help English learners learn English exclamations more effectively.

DIRECT REFUSAL ACTS IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE BASED ON THE NOVEL “GONE WITH THE WIND” AND ITS TRANSLATED VERSION “CUỐN THEO CHIỀU GIÓ”

The article explores direct refusals in English and their Vietnamese equivalents through a comparative analysis of the direct refusals in the novel “Gone with the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell and the Vietnamese translated version “Cuốn theo chiều gió” by Vũ Kim Thư. The study's primary aim is to examine how refusals are expressed in English and how these expressions are translated into Vietnamese, considering linguistic differences. In order to achieve the set aims and objectives, descriptive and comparative methods are employed and supported by qualitative and quantitative methods with data including 87 direct refusals. The findings suggest that the core component that plays a central role in the structure representing direct refusals includes negative words and words with negative connotations. In terms of constructive methods, both languages commonly use negative words such as no, not, never, nothing, no interest ... in English and không, thôi, ... in Vietnamese. Besides, no data for the direct refusal acts with the nuclear as performative verbs were found. This research also provides valuable insights for language teachers, learners, and scholars interested in the intersection of language, culture, and communication.
