Đào tạo trực tuyến làm gia tăng mạnh hoạt động thu thập, lưu trữ, phân tích và chia sẻ dữ liệu người học, từ hồ sơ hành chính, kết quả học tập đến nhật ký LMS, dữ liệu tương tác, bản ghi âm - ghi hình, dữ liệu sinh trắc học và dữ liệu suy luận từ trí tuệ nhân tạo (AI).. Bài viết phân tích cơ sở lý thuyết và pháp lý của bảo vệ dữ liệu người học; làm rõ quan hệ giữa dữ liệu cá nhân, dữ liệu nhạy cảm và dữ liệu giáo dục; đồng thời liên hệ với thực tiễn Trường Đại học Mở Hà Nội.
