A STUDY ON METAPHOR, METONYMY RELATING TO “FACE, HAND” IN ENGLISH-VIETNAMESE IDIOMS, PROVERBS

Our society has been continuously changing and developing, so meanings of words have also been changed to reflect these continuous changes. Semantic changes relating to parts of the body in English and Vietnamese idioms and proverbs are not exceptional. In this article, metaphor and metonymy (two popular methods of semantic changes in English and Vietnamese idioms and proverbs) relating to “Face, Hands” will be studied. Comparing, contrasting, descriptive, quantitative and qualitative methods will be used to find semantic changes in “Face, Hands” as well as differences and similarities between English and Vietnamese. The result of the study, to some extent, will enhance the process of learning and teaching English.
