SOLUTIONS TO CORRECT ERRORS IN ENGLISH PARAGRAPH WRITING OF THE FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AT FACULTY OF ECONOMICS, HANOI OPEN UNIVERSITY

Abstract

Writing is a difficult skill among the four skills of English practice: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Therefore, it is inevitable for even a good student to make mistakes in his/ her writing. The purpose of the study was to find out some relevant solutions to correct errors in English paragraph writing of the first-year students at Faculty of Economics, Hanoi Open University. The study employed interviewing, teaching diary writing, and statistical research methods in order to analyze errors in paragraph writings of 70 first- year students at Faculty of Economics, Hanoi Open University. The result showed that there were 548 errors in 3 groups: grammar, vocabulary, expressions and 6 causes. Through the results of the study, some solutions were proposed with the hope to help students self-correct their errors in paragraph writing and then improve their writing skill effectively. The study also hopes to help the teachers improve their teaching of writing skill.
