Tóm tắt

Existential sentences in English, featured by the typical structure There-be,  so far have been extensively described, analyzed in numerous research and English teaching documents. When the authors analyze their syntactical features, almost all of them claim that the word there is not the subject of the sentence; the subject is the noun, also called noun phrase, which stands after the verb predicate be and controls the verb in terms of its singular or plural number. As a result, in teaching existential sentences, teachers of English often instruct their learners to base themselves on the form of the noun after be to decide on the singular   or plural form of the verb. By means of analyzing their syntactic and semantic features of the parts of the sentence and referring to related documents, we have found out that the existential sentences in English have normal word order: Subject (S) - Verb (V)- Subject Complement (Cs).
