IMPROVING SPEAKING SKILLS FOR MAJOR ENGLISH FIRST YEAR STUDENTS AT HANOI OPEN UNIVERSITY BY USING GROUPWORK ACTIVITIES

Abstract

The article aims at giving suggesions to improve speaking skills for major English first year students at Hanoi Open University through using groupwork activities. The article uses the survey questionnaires for students as the tool to fulfil the aim. The questionnaire with 16 question items written in Vietnamese were administered by 116 voluntary first-year major English students at Hanoi Open University in 2020-2021 academic school year. The results show that groupwork activities are frequently used in English speaking classes; however, they are not as effective as expected due to some negative factors like student’s interest and desire as well as teachers’ groupwork implementation and management. As a result, suggestions for improving Speaking Skills for major English first year students by Using Groupwork Activities” have been given to make somehow contribution to the effectiveness of groupwork activities in English speaking lessons at Hanoi Open University.
